A joint School Council meeting with Morgan Sindall and Monmouthshire County Council to discuss the design of the new school.
On the 3rd of July 2023, a joint meeting took place involving pupils from Deri View Primary School Council, King Henry VIII School Council and Headteacher Jonathan Watson. Tim Bird, Sustainable Schools Education Advisor from Monmouthshire County Council, led the meeting with discussions on the design and use of the new Ysgol 3-19 Brenin Harri’r VIII / King Henry VIII 3-19 School. Also in attendance were Senior Design Manager, Darren Rhys-Thomas, and Year Out Design Manager, Ayla Hulse, from Morgan Sindall Construction to talk through and answer any questions on the design aspects of the school.
This consultation was a follow up to a previous joint council meeting held with Morgan Sindall Construction and Monmouthshire County Council before the school design had been finalised. The pupils provided useful advice and ideas on what they would like their new school to look like and facilities they would like to see.
With the feedback from the pupils being taken on board by the Design Team, this meeting allowed the pupils to see how their thoughts had been captured in the design. The school council members are the first pupils to see the developed new School design images with preparations being made to roll these out to the rest of the school pupils
They provided lots of positive feedback on the design of the school and the incorporation of their ideas such as separate entrances for different year groups, light and bright spaces and variance of furnishings to support different types of learning. The pupils also offered insightful thoughts on how the school will be used from a pupil’s perspective with careful consideration of lesson and break time spaces.
The meeting was a great success and it’s fantastic to see the pupil’s contributions come to life in their new school design. The pupil’s enthusiasm for their new school was evident and they’re all looking forward to seeing the projects progress!
