Key facts

  • Expansion of the Emergency Department (ED) at Worthing Hospital to provide space for an Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), co-located with the existing ED at the front of the hospital.
  • The UTC, is an alternative to A&E for patients with minor illnesses and injuries and will feature a larger waiting area and new consultation rooms, relieving pressure on the main A&E department and improving patient care.
  • Works undertaken in two phases (Phase 1) Advance Enabling works (Phase 2- start Winter 2024) Main Works. Enabling works will commence in advance of the beginning of Phase 2.
  • Phase 1 involves the decommissioning of two old soakaways outside the A&E entrance and the installation of a new soakaway to facilitate the storm water run off at the front of the hospital against the latest regulations.
  • The capacity of the soakaway is designed to accommodate two consecutive 100-year storms of 6-hour duration, plus an allowance of +45% for climate change.

About the project

Expansion of the Emergency Department (ED) at Worthing Hospital, to provide space for an Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC), co-located with the existing Emergency department at the front of the hospital.

The project will be completed in phases.

Phase 1 Advance Enabling works – Aug-Nov-24

Comprises of the following:

  • Pedestrian Diversions within the Main Hospital Car Park

Pedestrian diversions will ensure safety and convenience by directing pedestrians away from construction zones in the car park, which will house a new soakaway. The area will revert to parking and cycle storage upon overall project completion, with early release of areas where possible.

  • Installation of a New Soakaway

A new soakaway, measuring 12m wide, 19m long, and 2.5m deep, will be installed within the main car park to manage stormwater runoff from the existing hospital roofs aswell as the new proposed urgent treatment centre extension. This car park area will be temporarily closed off during installation to ensure safety and minimise inconvenience.

  • Installation of Soakaway Drainage

Soakaway drainage will be installed from the proposed new building site to the new soakaway, ensuring effective water management and preventing flooding. This process will be coordinated to avoid disrupting hospital operations.

  • Construction of a Temporary ED Entrance

A temporary entrance for the ED will be constructed to accommodate walk-in patients, involving the relocation of the existing paediatrics waiting area. This ensures uninterrupted access to emergency services during construction.

Operational Context

All works will be carried out in a live hospital environment, between the main entrance, the ED department, and the main car park. Special measures will be taken to minimise disruption, including safety protocols, clear communication, and coordinated scheduling.

By undertaking these advance enabling works, the project aims to support the new construction while ensuring the continued provision of healthcare services.

Phase 2 Main Works

Comprises of the following:

Construction of a new single-storey building with a rooftop plant area, located between the ED department and the main hospital, to create new waiting areas and consultation rooms for the relocated Urgent Treatment Centre. This additional space will help free up critical areas within the existing ED department. The main works will proceed post-enabling and is currently being designed in collaboration with University Hospital Sussex
