HERE'S YOUR February UPDATE FOR MKUH RADIOTHERAPY CENTRE
Site activites:
- Following the preparation and installation of all the pads in block 1 and link 1, we prepared the reinforcement ahead of pouring the slab on 21st February.
- Pads foundations were continued in block 2 and link 2, ahead of preparing the slab which will be poured in March.
- On block 3 we continued the installation of the shutters for the concrete wall pours. Our first pour was on Monday 13th February, and we have since poured a further 2 sections of the walls. We are currently planning on pouring the walls into a total of 12 sections, each being 7 days apart.
- We also installed the attenuation tank for the water management of the building. This was backfilled and covered by a temporary concrete slab for the crane to be positioned to lift and install the steel frames
- Alongside this, we have started preparing the MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms) mat which is a temporary structure that will assist us and provide access for us to install the windows and external walls.
Community engagement
On 2nd February, Sam and Christabel visited Watling Academy in Milton Keynes to deliver an assembly to all year 9 students. The assembly showcased the different entry routes into the construction industry and several career opportunities that are currently available.
Sam and Christabel also visited Milton Keynes College for a school engagement event that the college hosted. During the day, we had year 6 and year 8 students who actively took part in a park in bridge-building activity led by Sam and Christabel. It was great to see some innovative ideas from the students.
The College said:
Your activity and involvement helped inspire young minds as to what the world of work could be and all careers are open for them to explore. The feedback from pupils and staff was very positive with some saying it was the best event they have ever been to! The teachers were equally enthusiastic in their reasons and appreciated how interactive it was.”
Work Experience
This month James has been shadowing the site management team. He has been looking at onsite health and safety as well as reviewing method statements and risk assessments. Further to this, the team has tasked him with monitoring the machinery on site and ensuring certification is up to date. He has also been logging quality inspections for the pad foundations, steel holding down bolts and the ground floor slabs.
We also welcomed Georgie, a level 3 student at Aylesbury UTC, who has shadowed the team every Monday for the last 4 weeks. He has been monitoring on-site progress, checking package scope, and reviewing reinforcement schedules ahead of ordering materials.
Finally, we were joined by Thomas, who came to us through the BuildForce initiative. Thomas spent a week shadowing the team and learning about what different roles the construction industry has to offer. He is looking to transition from the Army engineers into the construction industry and is hoping to become a project manager in the future.
What's coming up!
In March, we will be completing block 2 slabs and starting the steel frame and metal decking to the first floor and roof slabs. In block 3, we will look to continue pouring sections of walls every Monday
