Morgan Sindall Construction has broken ground on a new £6 million leisure centre in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.
The main contractor is delivering the project for West Lindsay District Council through the Scape Regional Construction framework, which creates efficiencies in the procurement of construction services for the public sector across the Midlands and East of England.
Set on Gainsborough Road, the 18,300 sq ft leisure centre will be the cornerstone of a wider £7.8 million council investment to improve the health and wellbeing of local residents, proactively addressing rising levels of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and dementia.
The start of building work was marked with a traditional turf cutting ceremony. It was attended by Councillor Jeff Summers, Leader of West Lindsey Council, Chairman of the Council, Councillor Pat Mewis, members of Morgan Sindall Construction’s project team, and representatives from Everyone Active which will operate the centre once open.
Designed by CPMG Architects, the centre will be set over two storeys and feature state-of-the-art exercise equipment, alongside a 7,400 sq ft sports hall, café and changing areas. There will also be an external 3G all-weather pitch.
Construction is expected to complete in spring 2020. Once open, the centre will be operated by Everyone Active.
Rob Cant, Scape Regional Construction framework director, at Morgan Sindall Construction said: “First-class leisure facilities are the foundation of any health and wellbeing strategy, and we’re incredibly pleased to working with West Lindsay District Council to deliver on its plans.
“We have deep expertise in the leisure sector and understand the specific requirements of Everyone Active, having worked with the operator on other successfully-received centres across the Midlands.
“The framework procurement route enabled early collaboration between everyone involved, allowing us to apply our experience, capability and local supply chain connections, taking the project from planning to groundbreaking without delay.”
Councillor Summers said: “Today signals the start of work on our new dry leisure facility, something I am personally pleased to see taking place. It demonstrates the confidence the district council has in the town and in this development as it has put in considerable investment into the facility. It is the most significant investment in the town for many years and forms the beginning of a new initiative to energise the economy for Market Rasen.
“I hope you will all make use of this fantastic facility, which will open up the opportunities for people of all ages, once the build is complete.”
Kerry O’ Neill, contract manager at Everyone Active, said: “We’re excited that construction work is underway to bring an excellent new centre to Market Rasen. It has been designed to cater for the needs of local people and encourage them to live healthier lifestyles.
“We have worked with West Lindsey District Council for a number of years and have a fantastic partnership in place. It is great to extend our work with the Council to deliver another centre that the local community can be proud of.”
Mark Robinson, Scape Group chief executive, added: “It’s great to be working with West Lindsay District Council to shape a real and lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of its community.
“By using our framework, West Lindsay District Council have guaranteed cost-effective and efficient project delivery, whilst ensuring that the local supply chain and economy will experience significant benefits throughout the project’s lifetime and beyond”.
