Rosecliffe Spencer Academy

Introduction

The Rosecliffe site is part of the Sharphill housing development, one of many projects currently being built as part of the Edwalton Strategic Development Allocation. The project was commissioned on behalf of the County Council to meet the s106 obligations of the development. In addition, a temporary modular learning village was also constructed alongside the main school for the children to continue their learning on site while the new school was constructed.

Inside this school we have created nine general purpose classrooms, offices, a hall and a kitchen. There is also a library and a nurture room which provides alternate learning spaces for children with specific needs. Four outdoor sports pitches feature alongside a soft play area, tarmac playground, and a garden for nursery pupils. Parents and staff will also benefit from the new car park with 35 spaces; including two for disabled usage and two for electric vehicle charging. The new school will also allow for future expansion to accommodate up to 420 pupils.

Our Approach

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the site team managed to handover the project seven weeks early through strategic collaboration throughout the supply chain.

As well as implementing the Construction Leadership Council’s SOPS to ensure work was able to continue safely, digital collaboration with supply chain and designers meant the team were able to stay on programme.

This included reorganising the programme to allow (in as many circumstances as possible) one sub-contractor to be allocated to one area of the building. As this project was conducted during the peak of the pandemic, it served as a perfect benchmark for how we can operate safely on other projects in the future.

In order to minimise the cost of the temporary learning facility, the team accelerated the works to the kitchen and main hall building to make access available at the point of occupation.

Lasting Legacy

To help ensure a lasting legacy for the scheme and surrounding community, our social value plan set out the activities and engagements that help generate over £3.1 million in social value.

This included remote STEM engagement for local students, volunteer community projects and partnering with the local jobcentre to provide opportunities for locally unemployed.

Keeping the children of Rosecliffe involved in what was a distressing time for many during the pandemic was key. The team interacted with the children regularly. This included sending activity cards to the children and allowing the children the opportunity to create COVID-19 posters. In memory of this eventful year, one of the classroom floors has been decorated prior to carpeting. This will be there for its whole lifetime and the decoration exemplifies the events of the 2020.

The handover of any project is always an emotional time for all involved. To make the occasion as special as possible, the site team provided the school with a new book vending machine which will be used as a reward for good behaviour. Students will receive a token where they will be able to vend a book of their choice. 100 new books were provided by the team for this machine.
