As part of a wider £45 million investment into extra care facilities in Gosport, the Morgan Sindall team, in collaboration with our sister company Lovell Later Living, have completed the development of a new extra care facility on Willis Road.

Introduction

The population in Gosport is set to increase with Gosport Borough Council projecting an increase in the over 75s population. As a direct response to this, Places for People Living Plus along with Hampshire County Council have invested heavily into ensuring extra care facilities in Gosport are of an adequate standard and can meet the needs of the local community.

The overall project has seen the conversion of the previous, not fit for purpose Addenbrooke extra care facility on Willis Road, into one and two-bedroom apartments for people aged 55 and over. The scope of works required the inclusion of community facilities which would provide independent living with access to 24-hour on-site care and support, when required. The now named Spinnaker View Care Home, will be made available for affordable housing through Places for People Living who are a specialist extra care home provider.

324 Tonnes of Carbon saved using Porotherm blocks

During the time of tendering there was a lot of uncertainty around cost increases and material availability. This was particularly the case with bricks which required careful consideration to avoid any project delays. Through collaborating with the project team, Architects Reform suggested an alternative block and brick system in Porotherm Blocks due to being readily available in the UK and quantities of the material not causing an issue.

Porotherm Blocks is a modern clay block structural walling system, which provide versatile, high performance and sustainable results. These innovative bricks are easy to use, environmentally friendly, and versatile. They are low weight, strong, durable, and can be used for both load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls.

Porotherm Blocks are 60% lighter than conventional walling material which allows substantial savings on structural cost. They also provide excellent insulation which was crucial for the project scope due to the vulnerability of the occupants. The blocks were also part of our bespoke ’10 tonne carbon challenge’ whereby 324 Tonnes of carbon was saved due to switching to Porotherm Blocks.

Specialists help and support

To ensure the quality of the project was of the highest standard possible, the team hired a specialist consultant to inspect the works every month. Premier Guarantees are specialists within the care home (extra care) sector and would inspect works whilst offering suggestions where possible. The project team also went one step further by employing a clerk of works to inspect the works completed.

£1700 worth of upgrades to Marvels and Meltdowns Cabins

At Morgan Sindall, we strive to support and invest in the local community as much as possible. One way in which we do this is through our Give and Gain days. On Friday 1st July, the project team carried out a Give and Gain Day for a local charity, Marvels and Meltdowns. Marvels and Meltdowns is a parent-led, not-for-profit, registered charity supporting families with children affected by ADHD and/or ASC (Autistic Spectrum Conditions) in Gosport, Fareham, and the surrounding areas.

The charity was moving into a new upgraded facility and were temporarily using a cabin which was unfortunately not fit for purpose with little outdoor space. The project team were approached by the charity whereby the team helped breath life into their temporary cabin.

The team conducted the following activities:

Painting the outside of the cabins
Installing a new fence and gate
Design and installation of a new Push Chair canopy for the Push Chair storage
Revamp of the garden
Relay of Astro Turf
General tidying up and getting rid of brambles.

The team completed £1700 worth of works and repairs to the cabin and were able to achieve Marvels and Meltdowns vision.

Macey’s Work Experience Story

The Project Manager and Social Value Manager attended one of the Itchen Colleges careers events to promote the plethora of opportunities within Construction.

Macey Blackman (a college student) approached the Morgan Sindall team regarding engineering work experience opportunities, which, we were able to provide Macey. Macey utilised her half term periods by visiting site and helping the team with various activities including package management. At the end of her work experience, she was keen to work with Morgan Sindall in the long term and was successful in her application.

Macey is currently completing a degree in Construction Management and is an example of talent and determination.
