Our Approach
The NHS Hospital Trust had a goal to transform and enhance the staff, visitor, and patient experience in relation to parking. The requisite of this facility was to ensure a safer, sustainable, and future proofed experience for all whilst also freeing up space for another part of their hospital site to be developed. The design team which included Gilling Dodd Architects, Couch Consulting and Couch Perry Wilkes were engaged early and workshops with subcontractors took place to ensure the project met the Trusts vision. With the new car park located closer to the hospital, increased lighting and CCTV cameras, the project provides a stylish lasting legacy for the hospital and community.
Sustainability
The client and the team had a vision of ensuring the car park was sustainable and all elements of the construction were as environmentally friendly as possible. Granulated Ground Blast Slag (GGBS) was used as a substitute for cement in the concrete production. The use of this substitute in the concrete foundations resulted in saving over 120 tonnes of carbon which translates to powering roughly 380 houses for one year. The philosophy of sustainability ran throughout the whole team with the supply chain thoroughly engaged. Our subcontractors also had several initiatives of their own to improve sustainable performance.
The Burton car park project was the first Morgan Sindall Construction project in the country to trial the EnviroHub. The EnviroHub is a concrete washout machine designed to remove impurities out of the concrete residue and use carbon dioxide to neutralise the waste so that the water can be re-used for washing down or cleaning tools.
The team also used Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) bio-diesel plant machinery which is a diesel substitute made from cooking oil and other environmentally friendly products. By using this machine in place of traditional red diesel, the substitution offered up to 90% reduction in carbon emissions.
Respecting our neighbours
The project was sandwiched between an accommodation block for students and a treatment centre with live theatres. This meant that ensuring minimal disruption to the neighbours and patients was vital. Part of the project required installing a retaining wall adjacent to the medical student’s accommodation. This involved extensive piling works which were planned to be sheet piling. However, this type of piling is extremely noisy with levels regularly exceeding 100db. As the accommodation and the treatment centre were all in close proximity and would be affected by the noise, the team altered the method of piling to a King Post system which was a much quieter alternative.
We wanted the NHS staff and public to be well informed about the progress of their new car park. The team reconfigured the design of the hoarding which allowed the public and NHS staff to watch their car park develop every day. Monthly newsletters were also displayed on the notice board outside the site and was distributed within the NHS Estates department.
Social Impact
The team supported a range of local businesses and charities within the area. Every week, the hospital would set up a fruit and veg stall at the front entrance of the hospital. The team would buy regularly from here and provide the fruit and veg to our site operatives which helped meet health and wellbeing objectives. The Trust also has their own charity (Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity) which is dedicated to helping nurses and staff through the COVID-19 pandemic. We donated £250 to this fantastic cause and donated £450 worth of materials to a local charity in Burton who work with local schools and provide work for disadvantaged people.
During the project, the team organised school visits for a few schools and a local nursery on the project. This included children from Highfield Spencer Academy, Ravensdale Primary School and the hospital staff’s children. The children had a hand in helping build the car park by safely sitting and driving in one of the diggers. They left with a goody bag provided by Ivor Goodsite and a certificate for their good work helping build the car park.
The project ran through a difficult COVID-19 period which tragically saw the loss of many NHS Staff. The Trust was keen to develop a memorial area for friends and families to come and remember the lost ones. A memorial heart was created by the Trust and the team donated and installed a plinth for the hospital which was our way of saying Thank you.
Morgan Sindall are the gold standard. They are compassionate, they're caring, extremely professional, extremely easy to work with. They go above and beyond and they they've lived and breathed what they said they would do. For me it's the holistic approach to everything they did. I knew if they cared that much about their staff and the environment that their staff worked in, they would care that much about our job and our patients, and that was that was followed through with the build"
