Morgan Sindall Construction selected for £9.8 million Enfield SEMH School

News |

Morgan Sindall Construction's Northern Home Counties business has been appointed to deliver a new 70-place school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH) in Enfield.

The Department for Education (DfE) appointed the main contractor to the £9.8 million project through the DfE construction framework, strengthening the longstanding relationship between the Department and Morgan Sindall Construction. The recent appointment is the latest in a number of developments the company and the Northern Home Counties team have successfully delivered for the Department for Education.

Salmon’s Brook Special School, operated by The Edmonton Academy Trust, is a free school built on a therapeutic model of education and support. It will comprise of 12 classrooms for students aged 11-18.

The secondary school is a single story build and will include science laboratories, food tech facilities, music studios, traditional classrooms and a double-height sports hall.

Once complete, the school will seek apprentices and new starters to diversify its workforce.

With only one school in Enfield currently catering for pupils with these needs, Salmon’s Brook will more than double the places available in the borough, providing outstanding educational facilities for the community.

Through the planning stage the team ensured they balanced the needs of the client with the requests of the planners, collaborating closely with the DfE, the project architect Haverstock, London Borough of Enfield and key Stakeholders, presenting updated proposals to London Borough Enfield which received positive feedback.

David Rowsell, area director at Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “We are pleased to have been awarded this key project, which will significantly enrich and bolster Enfield’s special needs provision. It’s an honour to provide the borough with additional provisional care to meet its growing need.

“The team has successfully worked through the planning stages and we now look forward to continuing our strong working relationship with the Department for Education as we deliver this outstanding new facility.”

In June 2020, Morgan Sindall Construction launched its Building Better Futures report. Based on in-depth interviews and discussions with key stakeholders within the SEND sector, it sets out the current challenges and areas of focus required in the design of special schools, to ensure all children with special educational needs and disabilities can access the education they require.
